Energy Management

The most costly ingredient in all manufacturing today is energy; whether electricity, gas, steam or compressed air, energy has to be used sparingly - and optimally. Energy schemes are usually stand-alone and are centred upon buildings; whereas the industrial user of energy will probably wish to see energy data (and energy control schemes) in a broader view of manufacturing. This can also be said of associated environmental issues and water consumption.

If all data can be in a single database then meaningful comparisons can be made; such as energy cost per batch, or water usage (therefore cost) per batch. Energy data acquisition is the same as other types of data acquisition - although usually the sources of data are placed away from machines and production lines.

An industrial data acquisition scheme will usually involve and Historian - all data being aligned in chronological order and immediately ready for trending and other cross-measured value comparisons. Energy data depends upon the existence and capability of meters and in some cases sensors with remote I/O. Much investment can be made in metering everything, or a simple overview can be enough - it is a matter of circumstances and budgets. Communication can cause a problem but wireless devices can be installed to avoid large installation costs. A good tip is to display energy usage on the operator's SCADA display - low scores are required!

Once the energy data is within the industrial data then true insight appears quickly, such as is it energy cost-effective to run an extra shift? Do we know the actual energy cost of the batch? Energy data is also required when negotiating CCL rebates and other fiscal issues, and can also be used for energy target setting.
